Debt Review Removal — Process, Cost & Timeline

The two legal ways to remove debt review from your name — and how to avoid the removal scams targeting desperate consumers

Person receiving a debt review clearance certificate — removal process in South Africa

"Debt review removal" is one of the most searched financial terms in South Africa — over 5,000 people Google it every month. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most scammed. Companies promise to "remove debt review from your name in 7 days for R2,500" — targeting people who did not use a reputable debt review company in the first place — and then either disappear with your money or file fraudulent documents that get you into deeper trouble. This guide explains the two legitimate ways to remove debt review and what each actually costs.

Method 1: Complete Your Debt Review (The Right Way)

The simplest and cheapest way to remove debt review is to finish it. When all debts included in your debt review plan have been fully paid, your debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate (Form 19). This certificate is sent to all credit bureaus, who then remove the debt review flag from your credit record within 7–21 business days.

Total cost of Method 1: R0. The clearance certificate is part of the service your debt counsellor is already being paid for through your monthly aftercare fee. There is no additional charge for removal when you complete the process properly.

Method 2: Court Application to Exit Early (Form 17W)

If you want to exit debt review before all debts are paid — for example, because your income has increased significantly and you can now afford the original contractual payments — you can apply to the court to have the debt review order rescinded.

Total cost of Method 2: R5,000–R15,000. And it is not guaranteed — creditors can oppose the application, and the court can refuse if it is not satisfied you can afford your original payments. If the court refuses, you have spent the money and are still under debt review. Think carefully before going this route.

The Removal Scams — What to Watch For

"Remove debt review in 7 days for R2,500"

Impossible. Bureau processing alone takes 7–21 days after receiving a valid certificate or court order. Anyone promising instant removal is lying.

"We will hack the bureaus and remove your listing"

This is fraud. Tampering with credit bureau records is a criminal offence. If you participate knowingly, you are also committing a crime.

"Pay upfront and we will handle everything"

Legitimate debt counsellors include removal in their existing fees. Removal-specific companies charging R2,000–R5,000 upfront are almost always scams. Read our guide on spotting debt scams.

"You don't need to pay your debts, we just remove the flag"

The debt review flag exists because you OWE money. Removing the flag without paying the debt does not cancel the debt — creditors can immediately resume legal action, garnishee orders, and repossession.

What Happens to Your Credit Record After Removal

Once the debt review flag is removed (through either method), your credit record updates immediately. If you completed debt review (Method 1), all included debts show as "paid up" — which is a positive signal. Most clients see their credit score improve by 50–150 points within 6 months of clearance. Many successfully qualify for home loans and vehicle finance within 12 months.

If you exited early (Method 2), your remaining debts still show on your credit record at their current status. You resume paying original contractual instalments at original interest rates. There is no improvement in your credit report — you are simply no longer under debt review.

Should You Stay or Should You Go?

Before trying to exit debt review early, consider: your interest rates under debt review are 0–5%. The moment you exit, they revert to 14–27%. A R500,000 debt at 4% costs R2,200/month in interest. The same debt at 20% costs R8,333/month. Exiting early to "get credit again" often leads people right back into the debt trap that brought them to debt review in the first place.

Our advice: Complete the process. The 3–5 years of debt review gives you a debt-free fresh start with a clean credit record. Exiting early gives you unfinished debt at full interest rates and a credit record that still shows outstanding balances. The cost of staying in debt review is almost always less than the cost of leaving early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to remove debt review?

If you complete debt review and receive a clearance certificate, the removal is free — your debt counsellor applies to the credit bureaus to remove the flag at no additional charge. If you want to exit debt review early (before all debts are paid), you need a court application through an attorney, which costs R5,000–R15,000 depending on complexity. Be wary of companies advertising 'debt review removal' for R2,000–R3,000 — many are scams.

How long does it take to remove debt review from my name?

After receiving your clearance certificate, the credit bureaus should remove the debt review flag within 7–21 business days. If it has not been removed after 30 days, contact your debt counsellor to follow up with the bureaus. For court-ordered removal (Form 17W), the timeline depends on court schedules — typically 2–4 months from application to order.

Can I remove debt review without paying all my debts?

Yes, but only through a court application (Form 17W) where you demonstrate that you can now afford your original contractual instalments without the reduced debt review payments. A court must be satisfied that you are no longer over-indebted. This is not easy to prove and requires legal representation. Your creditors can oppose the application.

What is a clearance certificate?

A clearance certificate (Form 19) is issued by your debt counsellor once all debts included in your debt review plan have been fully paid. It is the official document that authorises the credit bureaus to remove the debt review flag from your credit record. All included debts will then show as 'paid up' on your credit report.

Can I just ignore debt review and apply for credit?

No. While the debt review flag is on your credit record, no registered credit provider will extend credit to you — it is illegal under Section 88 of the NCA. Attempting to get credit while under debt review can result in your debt review being terminated (losing all protections) and the new credit agreement being declared reckless lending.
