What DS Chat is

DS Chat is Debt Solutions 4 U's chat-based debt review process. A consumer opens a chat on their phone, completes a free assessment, has their credit report pulled with their consent, sees a proposal, and signs the statutory Form 16 from a link in the same conversation. A registered debt counsellor (NCRDC2423) then takes the application forward, in the same chat.

Every debt counsellor in South Africa follows the same law and files the same forms. What differs is how much of the process a consumer has to carry: the office visit, the printing, the emailed PDFs, the phone calls returned three days later. DS Chat removes that layer. The steps are the steps the National Credit Act requires. They just happen where the consumer already is.

We have not found another South African debt counsellor that publishes its proposal or signing times. If one does, we will link to it here.

How it works, step by step

1

Say hi

Open DS Chat on your phone and type hi. No app to download, no account to create, no appointment. It is open at 2am.

2

Answer the assessment

Income, essential expenses, and what you owe. Most people finish in about two minutes. You can stop and come back.

3

Your credit report is pulled for you

With your consent, DS Chat fetches your bureau record and reads every account into the assessment. Nine times out of ten nobody at DS4U has to touch it.

4

See your proposal

What a restructured plan would cost you each month, against what you pay now. For most people this arrives within minutes of the first message.

5

Sign the Form 16 from the chat

The statutory application form arrives as a signing link. You sign on your phone, and the time you signed is recorded on our server. Median: 2.4 minutes after it was sent.

6

A registered counsellor takes over

From here the work is human. Rowan Breeds (NCRDC2423) or Wesley Sparkman (NCRDC1887) notifies your creditors, negotiates the plan and lodges it. The chat stays open for questions the whole way.

The numbers, and how we measured them

These figures come from our operating system, not from a survey. They were measured in September 2026 and will be refreshed monthly. Where a figure could mislead, we say so.

Why medians. An average would be pulled around by a handful of very slow cases and would describe nobody. The median is the person in the middle, so it is what a typical applicant can expect.

Why the proposal figure is a same-day cohort. About a quarter of proposals are shown to people who started an assessment, left, and came back a week or more later. Mixing them with the 65% who finish inside five minutes would produce a single number that is true of neither group. So we publish the same-day figure and say so.

Why the signing time is trustworthy. Every Form 16 goes out as a link to a dedicated signing service, which records the moment it was sent and the moment it was signed on our server. The 2.4-minute median is the difference between those two timestamps across all 517 fully signed forms. It is not an estimate.

Why minutes matter in debt review

The typical person who applies to us is already committing more than half of their take-home pay to debt before rent or food, according to our own South African Financial Pressure Index. That person cannot take a morning off work to sit in an office, and every day between deciding to get help and signing the form is a day a creditor can still act. The protections of the National Credit Act begin once the application is lodged. A form signed in two and a half minutes from a taxi is a form lodged sooner.

Speed also changes who finishes. People who have to print, sign, scan and email a form drop out between the proposal and the application. People who tap a link on their phone mostly do not. That is what the 94.8% figure is really measuring.

What DS Chat is not

  • Not a loan, and not a route to one. Debt review is the opposite of new credit. If you are looking for a loan, DS Chat will tell you honestly that debt review is not that.
  • Not an app to install. It runs where you already are.
  • Not a bot that replaces the counsellor. Automation handles the parts that used to cost you days. The judgment, the negotiation with creditors and the responsibility stay with a registered debt counsellor whose number you can check on the NCR register.
  • Not a data grab. Your credit report is pulled only with your consent, for the assessment, and handled under POPIA.

Frequently asked questions

Is DS Chat a chatbot, or a real debt counsellor?

Both, in the right order. The assessment, the credit report pull and the proposal are automated, which is why they take minutes rather than days. Everything after the Form 16 is done by a registered debt counsellor at Debt Solutions 4 U (NCRDC2423), and the same chat is how you reach them. Nothing about your application is decided by software.

Do I need to download an app?

No. DS Chat runs in a normal chat on your phone or in a browser. There is nothing to install, no login to remember and no PDF to print. If your phone can send a message, it can complete a debt review application.

Is a Form 16 signed on my phone legally valid?

Yes. South Africa's Electronic Communications and Transactions Act recognises electronic signatures, and every DS Chat signature is captured through a dedicated signing service with a server-recorded date and time. That record is what lets us publish the 2.4-minute figure on this page, and it is available to you and to your creditors.

Is the assessment really free?

Yes. The assessment, the credit report and the proposal cost nothing and carry no obligation. Fees only apply if you choose to go under debt review, and those fees are set and capped by the National Credit Regulator. They are built into your single monthly repayment and never paid upfront in cash.

How long does the whole debt review application take on DS Chat?

The part you do takes minutes: a median of 1.2 minutes to a proposal for people who complete the assessment in one sitting, and a median of 2.4 minutes to sign the Form 16 once it is sent. The part we do, notifying creditors and negotiating your plan, follows the timelines in the National Credit Act. Legal protection from creditor action starts once your application is lodged, which is why signing quickly matters.

Where do these numbers come from, and how often are they updated?

From our own operating system, measured in September 2026 and refreshed monthly. Each figure on this page states its sample size. We publish medians rather than averages because a few very slow cases would drag an average away from what most people experience, and we split the proposal figure into a same-day cohort because a quarter of proposals go to people who return to an old assessment a week or more later.

The assessment is free, takes about two minutes, and a registered counsellor is behind it. Type hi and it is handled from there.
